HAVERFORD, Pa - Eastern University men's soccer edged MAC Commonwealth opponent Alvernia 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Jake Sankey scored the game-winner in the second half to give the Eagles their third win of the season.
Eastern (3-0-1) had two chances early in the first half but were unable to capitalize leaving the match tied. In the fourth minute, the Eagles earned a corner and
JD Saracco stepped up to take the kick. Saracco played a beautiful ball into the box, and
Jacob Myers ripped a shot on net but was denied by Crusaders goalkeeper Zach Rider.
Later in the first half
Sean Dougherty had an opportunity in the 38th minute. Dougherty got his head to the ball but once again Rider was there to deny the attempt. The teams headed to the locker room tied at 0-0.
The Eagles came out firing in the second half and looking to break the deadlock. Sankey had a chance in the 47th minute off a corner kick by Saracco. Sankey got his head to the ball but saw his attempt saved by Rider. Then in the 54th minute, Sankey broke through and netted the lone goal of the match. Sankey finished off a pass from
Billy Walenda to give Eastern the lead and eventual win.
Alvernia had two opportunities late to tie the match but was unable break through
Quentin Keibler and the Eastern defense. In the 75th and 78th minute, the Crusaders placed two shots on net but were turned away both times by Keibler to preserve the victory.
Overall Eastern took 12 total shots placing six on net while Alvernia took seven with six on net. Keibler finished the match with six saves tallying his second clean sheet of the season.
Eastern will travel to Swarthmore on September 14th for a 7 p.m. match.
