ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– With five league games scheduled for the weekend, Eastern University baseball knew that this afternoon's non-conference game against an undermanned University of Valley Forge squad would be a day for some bullpen guys to get in some work. Head Coach
Jed Morris surprised his team on Tuesday when he told them that senior reliever
Jordan Miller was going to get more than a little work. Morris made the decision to give Miller, a team leader who now has 32 career appearances on the mound, a chance to play all nine positions in a single game. Miller scored three times and knocked in three as the Eagles cruised to a 21-1 win.
"It all came back to Jordan's dream of getting an at bat," Morris said of the plan. "He has talked about hitting since his freshman year. I really appreciate Jordan and the way he is with the younger guys on the team, and I felt like this could be a nice tribute to a guy who was here my first day on the job."
Miller, went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles in the seventh spot in the line-up, and started the game behind the plate. "I had to make sure that the catching went ok," Morris said, "So I had him catching
[Joe] Clancy. Joe has good command, so I knew he can do that."
Twelve different Eagles pounded out 23 hits on the way to the win. Fellow senior
Joe Grato also hit a pair of doubles in his two at bats. Sixteen of Grato's 28 hits are for extra bases. His average is now up to .528 for the spring.
After handling his catching duties, Miller had four chances in the field. He made a clean play on a ground ball at third in the second inning. He handled a high pop fly at shortstop in the third inning and tossed out a runner on a ground ball to second in the fourth. After not seeing a ball at first in the fifth, Miller played left for an out and right for an out in the sixth. Miller learned that the job of a fielder was not as easy as it looked. After getting a good jump on a ball flared into right, he closed his glove just a little early and the Patriots got their second base-runner of the day. That runner eventually came around to score on a single by Shelton Gray.
Miller's hardest hit ball came with the bases loaded in the sixth. He ripped a ball into center that the Patriot centerfielder caught over his head.
Miller closed out the game on the mound. He struck out a pair of Patriots to in his one inning of work.
Clancy picked up his first win of the year as the starting pitcher.
The Eagles (9-10-2) are scheduled to open their MAC-Freedom series at Delaware Valley University with a single game on Friday and will return home, weather permitting, to face the Aggies on Saturday.
