Kelly Breaks Record; Baseball Swept by FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. - Eastern Baseball was swept by host FDU-Florham on Sunday afternoon falling by scores of 10-6 and 11-10. The Eagles held a 10-2 lead in game two but saw the lead slip away as the Devils rallied back to claim the series sweep.

Angelo Kelly combined for six hits on the afternoon moving him into first place all-time on the single-season hits list. Kelly would finish the day going 6-11 scoring two runs with three RBI's.

Eastern (14-19-3, 7-11 MAC Freedom) jumped out to an early 1-0 in the top of the second inning. Peter Crawford doubled to right center field to plate Joseph De Los Santos, who had reached base safely earlier in the inning on an error.

The Devils (14-18-1, 7-11 MAC Freedom) scored eight of the next nine runs in the game, however, to take an 8-2 advantage. FDU-Florham scored five runs in the second and third innings combined to take a 5-2 lead that it never relinquished.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Eagle rallied back to cut the deficit to just two scoring four runs. Andrew Boykin led off the inning with a single and would score three batters later on a Craig Stanley single to short. After back-to-back runs by Shane Albertson and Jake Bunjo cut the Devils lead to just three  Kelly plated Crawford to make the score 8-6.

Two runs by FDU-Florham though in the bottom of the sixth made the score final at 10-6.

In the second game of the afternoon, the Eagles took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and then stretched the lead to 4-1 in the top of the fourth inning.

Eastern tacked on another six runs in the top fifth to extend their lead to 10-2. Joe Grato led off the inning with a triple to right field and then scored one batter later when Boykin singled to right. Jordan Laboy doubled down the left field line later in the inning to plate Boykin and stretch the lead to 7-2. An RBI single by Kelly the very next at-bat not only plated a run for the Eagles but it also gave him the record for most hits in a single season. Grato singled up the middle two batters later to score both Albertson and Laboy to stretch the Eagles lead to eight.

However, nine runs over the next two innings by FDU-Florham including a seven-run sixth inning led to the Eagles defeat. The Devils would win the game on a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh to take the game and the series.

Eastern travels to Gwynedd Mercy on April 25th starting at 3:30 pm.
