CHESTER, Pa. - In their first twilight doubleheader of the year, Eastern Softball dropped a pair of tight games at Widener. In both games, the Eagles managed to come back and tie the game or take the lead, but the Pride took advantage of their final at bat to earn walk-off wins. Widener scored twice in the seventh for a 3-2 win in game one and tallied a single run in the seventh for a 5-4 win in game two.
"These were two really tough defeats for us today," said Head Coach
Claire Emplit. "We were able to come back in both games, but we just couldn't find a way to get over the hump and secure a win."Â
In game one neither team could establish any offense as each team's pitching staff turned in solid performances.
Haleigh Williams was solid for Eastern (8-20) going six innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out four but suffered her tenth loss of the season.Â
After Widener (23-5) had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning, the Eagles battled back to take a slim 2-1 advantage.
Kelsey Clever led off the inning and homered to left field to tie the game at 1-1. A walk and single later in the inning gave Eastern runners on with two outs and a chance to stretch its lead, but the Eagles were unable to take advantage of the opportunity.Â
In the sixth inning, back-to-back singles gave Eastern runners on first and second again with another opportunity to take the lead. Clever came through once again and reached base on an error which plated
Alyssa Welsh to the Eagles a 2-1 advantage.Â
However, in the bottom half the inning the Pride rallied back scoring back-to-back runs on a double and single to retake the lead at 3-2.Â
In game two, Eastern once again fought back and tied the game in the top of the seventh inning but were unable to hold onto the momentum as Widener won on a walk-off single.Â
Morgan Burke and
Haleigh Williams combined to go 6.2 innings allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out two.Â
The Eagles gave up a run in the first inning, but they tied the game in the third on an RBI double from
Melissa Irick.
Taylor Crown scored on the play. The Pride scored three in the bottom of the fourth to grab what looked to be a comfortable 4-1 lead.
Kasey Williams and Haleigh Willams led the rally to tie the game. Kasey pulled the Eagles within one in the top of the fifth inning when she blasted a two-run homer to left to make the score 4-3. Haleigh then tied the game in the top of the seventh inning hitting an RBI single to left to drive in Kasey and tie the score at 4-4.
It looked like the teams were headed for extra innings after Haleigh recorded the first two outs of the inning. The Pride, however, had other plans. The home team strung together a double and a single to end the game.
Eastern hosts Alvernia on April 19th starting at 3 pm. Â
