Softball Falls Short at Delaware Valley

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - Eastern Softball was swept by host Delaware Valley on Thursday falling by scores of 4-2 and 5-4. The Eagles scored all six of their runs in the seventh inning and took their only lead in the series in game two but couldn't hang on as the Aggies rallied back to win on a walk-off.

In game one Haleigh Williams held Delaware Valley (12-10, 3-4 MAC Freedom) in check for most of the game allowing only four runs, three earned, on seven hits to keep Eastern (7-16, 2-5 MAC Freedom) in the game. Williams was solid for the Eagles allowing only two hits over the opening three innings of play.

The Aggies finally got on the scoreboard scoring two runs in both the fourth and fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Delaware Valley would hold that four-run lead until the top of the seventh inning when Eastern finally started to find some offensive rhythm.

Leah Lozzi tallied the first hit of the inning for the Eagles when she singled to left field and advanced H. Williams to second. Maria Day then singled the very next at-bat to plate H. Williams and cut the deficit to three. Deanna Laughman then singled one batter later scoring Lozzi to pull Eastern within two, 4-2, but that was as close as the Eagles would come. A groundout would end the hope of a comeback and the game.

Overall Williams allowed seven hits and gave up four runs while striking out four. Eastern was held in check for most of the game totaling only six hits while striking out 12 times and only earning one walk.

In game two the Eagles fell behind once again but managed to come back and even hold a brief 4-3 lead. Morgan Burke turned in a good effort for Eastern keeping the Aggies offense at bay for most of the game.

After giving up two runs in the bottom half of the first inning, Burke settled down and didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning when Delaware Valley homered to stretch its lead to 3-0.

Once again though Eastern would find its offense in the top of the seventh. Day led off the inning doubling to left field and advanced to third on a passed ball one batter later. Taylor Crown then singled to plate Day and pull the Eagles within two, 3-1. After H. Williams singled to score Crown and cut the deficit to just two, Kelsey Clever homered to give Eastern its first lead of the game and series at 4-3.

It looked like the Eagles would escape with the win, but Delaware Valley rallied back to steal the win and sweep the series. A wild pitch plated the game-tying run, and a sacrifice foul out scored the game-winning run to end the game at 5-4.

For the game, Burke went 6.2 innings allowing six hits and five runs while striking out five. Clever finished the game going 1-3 scoring one run with two RBI's.

Eastern hosts King's College on April 16th.
