Andes Stops 25; Women's Lacrosse Falls at Wilkes

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. - Women's Lacrosse fell to Wilkes on Wednesday afternoon 19-6 in the Eagles MAC Freedom opener. Cortney Andes was solid in the net for Eastern as she recorded a season-high 25 saves.

"Cortney has been a leader for us on the defensive end all season," said Head Coach Kim Campbell. "She left everything she had on the field today and made big save after big save to keep us in the game. She maintained her composure the entire game and played at an incredibly high level."

Andes stood tall in the net all day for the Eagles (2-10, 0-1 MAC Freedom) making 13 saves in the first half. After Wilkes (10-2, 2-0 MAC Freedom) score, two straight goals Andes tallied six saves in a row and held the Colonels scoreless for over 11 minutes.

After Wilkes had scored the opening, seven goals of the game Eastern found its way onto the scoreboard. Julie Haggan tallied her 25th goal of the season when she finished off a pass from Anna Charlebois to make the score 7-1. Charlebois scored just over two minutes to pull the Eagles within five heading into the locker room.

The Colonels stretched the lead to 8-2 just 15 seconds into the second half. Wilkes got another chance score within the opening minute of the half, but Andes stood tall and turned the Colonels away. Andes would record eight saves in the opening ten minutes and 12 overall in the second half. Haggan pulled the Eagles within six when she capitalized on a free position shot to make the score 9-3.

"Haggan was also big for us today," continued Campbell. "She was around the ball the whole game scoring goals and making plays for us. Her intensity level was incredibly high, and she fought for her teammates every play of the game."

Steph Biancucci netted her second goal of the season when she finished off a pass from Haggan to trim the Wilkes lead to just seven, 11-4. The Colonels, however, would score six goals in a row over a span of seven minutes to open up the game and take a 17-4 lead with just under eight minutes left to play.

Charlebois tallied her second goal of the game to make it 17-5 with just over five minutes left to play in the game. Alexandria Vincent made the score final when she scored with 18 seconds left in the game to make it 19-6.

Overall Andes saw 58 total shots with 44 of them on net. For the game, she tallied a save percentage of .568, which is also a single-game and season-high.

"Words can't sum up what Cortney meant to us this game," concluded Campbell. "We were in this game because of her efforts and how she played throughout it."
