Softball Swept by Stevenson

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Eastern Softball was swept by MAC Commonwealth opponent Stevenson on Monday afternoon by scores of 9-1 in game one and then 1-0 in extra innings in game two. Megan Quinn was outstanding for the Eagles in the second game but Eastern couldn't find any offense as they struggled to produce runs against the Mustangs.

"This was a tough game today for us," said Head Coach Claire Emplit. "We can't afford to have slow starts and then expect to compete."

In game one Stevenson (9-15) jumped out to an early 5-0 in the first two innings. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Mustangs tacked on four more in the second. Stevenson loaded the bases in the bottom half of the second scoring on back-to-back at-bats to make it a 5-0 game.

Eastern (7-15) didn't get on the scoreboard until the sixth inning. Kelsey Clever earned a walk to lead off the inning and advanced to second on an Alyssa Welsh single to give the Eagles runners at first and second. Taylor Crown doubled to plate Welsh and cut the deficit to 6-1.

Another run in the bottom of the sixth inning by the Mustangs made the score final at 7-1. Haleigh Williams suffered her eighth loss falling to 3-8 on the season.

In game two Eastern and Stevenson went to extra innings to decide a winner with the Mustangs escaping with a 1-0 victory. Quinn was spectacular for the Eagles as she went 7.1 innings, allowed just four hits, struck out two, and let up only one run.

"Megan was crucial for us today and really gave us a chance to win," stated Emplit. "She was accurate and hit her targets really making Stevenson work for and earn that win."

The Eagles offense was held in check, however, only tallying four hits throughout the game while leaving four runners on base. Eastern never truly threatened until the top of the seventh inning when Maria Day singled to left but on a sacrifice bunt attempt was caught trying to reach third. Crown then singled and after advancing to second on error was thrown out at home when she tried to score on a Leah Lozzi single.

In the eighth inning, Lozzi made it all the way to third, but two straight outs by the Eagles ended the threat. The Mustangs, however, took full advantage of their opportunity. After Laura Welch had advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, Kristen Mueller grounded into a fielder's choice but drove in the winning run in the process to make the score final at 1-0.

"We have no choice but to move on and learn from this series," concluded Emplit. "Thursday will be a great challenge for us, and we need to just refocus and move on from this one."

Eastern travels to Delaware Valley on April 14th for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 pm.
