Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Runs Past Rowan

GLASSBORO, N.J.– Eastern University Men's Basketball made 13-of-21 from behind the arc and shot 65 percent (39-of-60) from the floor to beat the host Rowan University Profs, 116-99 in a wild Monday night game. Shaquan Turk was a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor and led seven Eagles in double-figures with 23 points.

Coming into today's game, the Eastern Men's Basketball staff knew that their team would have to be able to take care of the basketball and make shots. Early on, the Eagles did both. Eastern scored the first ten points of the game and had a 30-18 lead at the midway point of the first half. Turk made the first basket of the game and was active on the glass and distributing the ball early, but, as he did in Saturday's game against Hamilton, he picked up his second early in the first half and went to halftime with only two points.

The rest of the Eastern team, when they were able to get it over mid-court, did fine. The Eagles made 7-of-9 3-pointers and led by as many as 16 points in the opening half. The Profs, true to their style, took risks on defense and forced Eastern turnovers. As the half wore on, the Eagles gave back several points against the Rowan press and the hosts went on a 7-0 run to cut the Eastern lead to 48-44 late.

Anthony Concepcion found Austin Duncan on the wing for a 3-pointer with two seconds left to close the half with Eastern up seven.

"We need to cut down on the turnovers," Head Coach Eric McNelley said after the game, "but Rowan's style of play is extremely difficult to play against. They have six wins already and they just keep coming. These are two good wins in three days. Our guys are going to have the day off tomorrow and we are going to prepare for Ursinus."

The win over Rowan (6-2) gave the Eagles their second win over a one-loss team in a three day span. In each of those games, Turk was held to just two points in the first half.

Turk scored 21 of Eastern's 65 second-half points. He was 7-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the foul line. Turk was not the only Eastern player to get hot in the second half. Victor Peña and Duncan each scored 11 points after the break.

Duncan hit a 3-pointer with a little less than 15 minutes to play to put the Eagles up 70-53. The lead ballooned to as much as 23 and never dropped into single digits as the Eagles limited turnovers and still shot very well from the floor and the line against the intense pressure of the Prof defense. The Eagles reached the century mark on a Duncan free throw with six minutes to play.

The 116 points is the most by an Eastern team in at least 10 years. Eastern scored 115 in a lopsided win at Penn State Brandywine in January of 2015. The difference tonight was that the 116 points came against a team on a six-game winning streak. The Profs are unbeaten in NJAC Competition and had not lost wince dropping their opener at Neumann.

Duncan had 17 points on nine shots, and Austin James put away 14 points on only 7 shots. All four of Eastern's interior players reached double-figure scoring. Abraham Kurnick (13), Peña (13), Lincoln Holley (11), and Marquise Peel (10) made 16-of-26 shots between them and grabbed 23 rebounds. Eastern shot 24-of-33 from the floor in the second half.

The Profs kept the game as close as they did by forcing 28 Eastern turnovers and launching 77 total shots. McNelley was pleased with his team's effort in the half court defense and in securing rebounds. Austin Carroll continued his run of games with balanced stats with eight points, six assists, and five rebounds.

"They are really difficult to play against," McNelley reiterated. "Their guards are very talented, and they do not let you take possessions off. I liked our balanced attack, and we got stops and rebounds when we needed them."

Shawn Wilson scored 21 points to lead Rowan.

The Eagles will look to extend their four-game winning streak at Ursinus on Saturday.
