Volleyball Rolls Past King's; Secures Top Seed

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Volleyball rolled to a three-set win over the visiting King's College Monarchs and locked up the top seed in the MAC Freedom Tournament for the ninth consecutive year. Stephanie Elechko had 12 kills, and Michelle Paulsen recorded an impressive ten blocks in the win.

The Eastern attack was stunningly efficient for the first two sets. The Eagles needed only 22 attacks to put away 13 kills in a 25-12 first set win. They hit an even more impressive .650 in the second set with 14 kills on 20 swings.

With the big Eastern block taking its toll, the Monarchs hit a negative number for each of the first two sets. The Eagles came into this evening's match ranked nationally in both blocks per set and opponents hitting percentage. The Eagles improved on both those numbers with their performance tonight.

The Eagles led 14-8 in the third set when the Monarchs put together a run. King's closed the gap to 18-15 but could never pull within three points. Eastern took the final set, 25-19. The Eagles had half of their 12 blocks in the third set.

With her ten blocks tonight, Paulsen moves into third on the Eastern single-season list. She is 26 blocks short of Kate Adams 152 set in 2002. She finished the night with six kills, four digs, and a service ace. Alicia Weigel hit .429 with six kills, and Sarah Roberts hit .400 with seven.

Rylie Haas had eight digs behind the Eastern block.

The No. 15 Eagles have a trio of games against top opponents at the Wid Guisler Invitational hosted by Juniata College this weekend. They will play the No. 10 ranked Juniata College Eagles on Friday night and the No. 7 Emory College Eagles on Saturday afternoon. They will finish that tournament with a match against the 18-6 Geneva College Golden Tornadoes.
