GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Eastern Women's Basketball broke its three-game losing streak Sunday afternoon defeating Mount Aloysius College 63-57 on the opening day of the Gettysburg Invitational.
Taylor Azer and
Taylor Price combined to score 31 points to help the Eagles get back to their winning ways.
"We need to play within ourselves and with poise," said Head Coach
Eric Houston. "We did not play together in the opening quarter but managed to turn it around and played as a team the rest of the game."
Eastern (8-4) started off rather slowly, however, in this game scoring only five points in the opening quarter of action. After that though it was all Eagles as they outscored the Mounties (5-5) in every quarter from there on out, 58-47.
Trailing Mount Aloysius 13-6 in the early stages of the second quarter, Azer hit a 3-pointer to pull Eastern within five at 13-9 while also sparking a 13-8 run to close out the first half of action. During the scoring spree, Azer and Price combined to score 11 of the 13 points to help pull the Eagles within two at the break, 21-19.
In the early stages of the second half, the Mounties retook momentum and extended their lead all the way to 33-25, but the Eagles would not go away.
Regie Robinson knocked down a jumper to spark a 13-2 run taking a 38-35 lead by the end of the third quarter and giving the Eagles their first lead since early in the first quarter at 5-4. Once again Azer and Price played a key role in the scoring run with Azer netting seven points and dishing out an assist while Price scored two points, recorded one assist, and two rebounds.
"She [Azer] played with confidence," continued Houston. "She hit some big shots and believed in herself. Price was great for us as well and fought to get another double-double."
Azer and Price combined to score 17 points in the second half netting nine and eight points respectively. Price recorded her second double-double of the year grabbing 13 rebounds to go along with 16 points for the game. Azer totaled 15 points on the afternoon finishing 3-of-5 from 3-point range shooting (.600).
Tori Grossi rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Eagles netting ten points while grabbing four rebounds.
Antwayne' Parks led all Mount Aloysius scorers with 12 points and four rebounds.
Eastern takes on Gettysburg tomorrow afternoon at 4 pm and will face former head coach Nate Davis.
"We need to come out and play Eastern basketball," concluded Houston. "It's a game the ladies had circled on the calendar."
