HAVERFORD, Pa.- Less than 20 hours after finishing a tremendous rally against SUNY-Brockport, Eastern University Women's Soccer was back on the field for the championship match against the hosts at the Haverford College kick-off classic. Again, the Eagles fell behind by a pair of goals in the first twenty minutes, but on this day, there were no legs for a rally. Haverford put away a goal in the final moments of the first half and pulled away to a 6-0 win.
The hosts Fords scored the opening goal in the ninth minute on a beautiful combination up the right side. They doubled their advantage on a shot from distance in the 17th minute. Eastern had a tremendous chance to cut the deficit in half on two consecutive corner kicks int he 39th minute from
Caroline Lozzi.
Emily Cole launched a clean header with good pace that was blocked at the goal line and the Eagles were unable to push a rebound attempt across the goal line.
The Eagles took encouragement from that moment and seemed to be gaining ground before Haverford flipped the momentum again with a goal out of the counterattack.
Jules Leco made the initial save on a tough shot, but Haverford's Kristen Fiore was there to push the ball across the line.
"We really struggled to find our legs against a very good team today," head coach
Dan Mouw stated, "They beat us to balls and were able to keep possession. With the short rest from the night before, we really needed to avoid chasing the game. It would have been interesting to see how things might have changed had we scored on either of the corners, but we can only guess now."
Haverford picked up a goal right after the intermission and added two more before it ended.
The Eagles have their home opener against Cabrini on Wednesday.
