Volleyball Rolls to Greyhound Premiere Title

Eagles TOp Dickinson and Stevens in Two

BETHLEHEM, Pa.- Eastern Volleyball (5-0) found its offensive rhythm and rolled to a pair of three set wins to claim the Greyhound Premiere Title. The 12th ranked Eagles hit .471 to top Dickinson and hit .333 against a very solid Stevens Tech side to claim the tournament crown.

"Our passing off serve receive and defense allowed our hitters to get in rhythm and terminate," head coach Mark Birtwistle noted. " Kaitlyn Gochenauer had maybe the best match of her career so far with eight kills on 10 attempts. She has worked really hard to earn this opportunity and she is taking full advantage."

The Eastern size proved to be overwhelming in the match. Stephanie Elechko tallied 10 kills and Morgan Shemonski had nine kills and four blocks. Michelle Paulsen continued to make her presence felt at the net with a seven block effort.

Birtwistle noted that his defense behind the block made it very difficult for Dickinson to score points. Rylie Haas compiled 20 more digs and was excellent in serve receive.

The Eagles, according to their coach, played their best match all year against Stevens Tech.

The first set went back and forth until about 18-18 before the Eagles pulled away to a 25-20 first set victory. From that point, the Eagles gained control with excellent blocking, great defense, and aggressive offense. Birtwistle felt that his team's ability to be efficient and aggressive on offense kept the Duck attack from getting any rhythm in the final two sets.

Steph Elechko led the way with 13 kills and five blocks. Gochenauer and Paulsen both hit over .700 in the match and combined for eleven blocks. Haas again recorded 20 digs and Rikki Schlager wound up with 31 assists.

Haas was named Tournament MVP. Schlager joined her on the All-Tournament team.
