Pride Slip Past Eagles Late

Widener Scores a Late Goal to Earn a 1-0 Victory

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Eastern Women's Soccer and the Widener Pride battled each other and the elements for 90 hard-fought minutes. Through the first 83 minutes of the match, both teams had chances, but neither could find a difference-making goal. The visiting Pride found the only goal of the match on a long ball over the top in the 84th minute for a 1-0 win.

The Eagles managed six shots in the first half but only put a pair on goal in the opening 45 minutes of play. Emily Cole fired all five of her shots in the opening half, but the junior forward was unable to get either one of her two attempts on goal past Widener's Olivia Pfautz.

"In a game like this, one critical mistake or one great play can make the difference," head coach Dan Mouw stated. Those mistakes were certainly few and far between but without being able to gain any momentum on either side the teams headed to the locker room tied at 0-0.

The Eagles had much more of the ball in the second half and had a great chance go just over the bar on a Hanna Kontanis header in the 57th minute.

"Caroline Lozzi put several great balls into dangerous areas for us today." Coach Mouw added. "We need to take better advantage of that good service." The Eagles had another narrow miss in the 63rd minute when Lydia Peachey ripped a shot that sailed over the goal from 18 yards out.

Widener's best chance of the half came in the 82nd minute. Nicole Foshini hit a 25 yard free kick off the crossbar. Freshman goalkeeper Adrianna Swinehart scrambled after the ball to keep Widener from having a rebound chance

Shortly thereafter Katy Laurie was able to get free just inside the box on the end of beautiful cross by Hannah Bomberger. Laurie shot and was instantly hit by the charging Pfautz. Her attempt sailed inches wide of the right post.

The Eagles had another great chance on a Lozzi corner kick, but a Kontanis header sailed high. The Pride found their break on the ensuing goal kick.

Pfautz ripped a driven ball toward midfield. The line drive kick skipped on the wet turf, over the heads of a pair of defenders and into the path of Brielle Errico. Widener's freshman forward timed her run well and slotted a finish past the sliding Swinehart for the final margin. It was only the second shot on goal of the game for the Pride.

"We came up short on the great plays," Mouw said, "and because of that, a critical mistake really cost us."

The Eagles had a 13-5 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks for the match, but, as often happens in soccer, Widener finished with the one goal that made the difference.

The Eagles (3-6-1)  begin MAC Freedom play on Saturday at Manhattanville College.
