READING, Pa. – Eastern University Men's Soccer kept its unbeaten start going with an impressive 4-1 win at Albright on Saturday night.
JD Saracco scored twice and
Sean Dougherty and
Jadon Ramsing added goals to lift the No. 14 Eagles (8-0-1) to their seventh straight victory. All four Eastern goals came on restart opportunities.
Ordinarily, a newly nationally ranked team coming off a road win over another nationally ranked opponent, might be in jeopardy of overlooking an opponent with only a single win. The Eagles, however, entered the match at Albright (1-6-1) with plenty of motivation. The Lions handed the Eagles a 2-1 home loss last year. The Eagles lost only four times in 2014. While the Eagles play several new players, many of the returning players still recall the sting of that loss as it played a part in keeping them from receiving an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Dougherty picked up his fourth goal of the season with a tidy finish of a loose ball in the box in the 33rd minute. Dougherty has come off the bench to score in four different matches this season. The sophomore midfielder headed home the lone goal on a corner kick at No. 22 Salisbury on Wednesday. Saracco doubled the Eastern lead in the 40th minute. The junior central midfielder whipped an inswung ball into the back corner of the net from a steep angle.
The Lions scored on a head ball by Austin Phillips in the 50th minute to cut the deficit in half. After the Albright goal, the Eagles began to get an attacking rhythm together. The goal snapped a string of 463 minutes for the Eastern defense. It is only the 4th goal conceded in nine games. Almost in response, Eastern's two center backs got a goal back.
Jadon Ramsing nodded home a
John Remsberg throw in the 68th minute to push the lead back to a pair of goals.
Sarraco finished the scoring on a free kick in the 76th minute. Dougherty picked up an assist on the play. Saracco has three goals this fall.
Jamie Stratton made three saves in goal to pick up the win for the Eagles.
The coaching staff was very pleased with the work of
Colin Furlong in helping the game to find a rhythm in the middle of the midfield.
Eastern will play against Rosemont College on Tuesday afternoon.
