Women's Soccer Nipped at Lebanon Valley

ANNVILLE, Pa.- Eastern Unviversity Women's Soccer dropped a tough 3-1 decision at Lebanon Valley College on Saturday. Lebanon Valley scored two first-half goals, held off a furious rally and scored on a late penalty kick for the final margin.

The Eagles were caught off guard on a counter attack in the seventh minute and fell behind by two when the host Dutchmen scored on a ball over the top in the 43rd minute.

"I was pretty disappointed with each of the first half goals we gave up," head coach Dan Mouw stated. "Like most goals, there were a number of people who could have stepped up to make a play. They executed and we did not, and we found ourselves in a big hole. The second one was most frustrating, because it is the third goal we have given up in the final five minutes of the first half this year. We have to stop that."

Out of the break, the Eagles looked like a different team. Emily Cole had two early chances at net, and Stephanie Le had a shot deflected over the endline for a corner. The Eagles had the chance they were looking for when Caroline Lozzi served a ball that ball landed at the feet of Ashley Zemeski. Zemeski hit her shot hard, but too close to Taylor reinhold, the LVC keeper. Reinhold stopped the point-blank effort to keep the Eagles off the board.

In the 58th minute, Cole found space and ripped a shot that hit the underside of the bar and was cleared from danger. The Eagles finally got on the board two minutes later when Cole got on a the end of a long feed from Courtney Davis and slid it home for her eighth goal of the season. Davis made the pass after a solid lateral pass from Katy Laurie.

"It was a good bit of work from Katy and our midfield to create the chance," Mouw stated. "We did a much better chance creating opportunities in the second half." The Eagles held a 9-8 edge in shots after half and had four corners to just two for the host Dutchmen.

The Eastern attack continued to press forward, but the LVC defense stood firm in front of Reinhold until they were able to escape pressure with a big ball out of the back that caught the Eastern back row pressing too high. Alex Imperatore recovered and got a tackle in against the lone attacker, but the official ruled that the sophomore center back made too much contact and awarded a penalty kick.

The Eagles (3-3-1)  face another unbeaten oppenent on Tuesday when No. 2 Messiah visits Olson Field for a 4 PM game.
