ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Volleyball has not lost a regular season conference match since 1999. That fact might by cited on too many occasions, but on this night, there was an air of inevitibiilty in the gym when the Delaware Valley University Aggies came into Eastern's gym looking for their first win of the season. The No. 15 Eagles left no uncertainty in an efficient 3-0 win in the MAC Freedom opener for both teams.
The Eagles (8-2, 1-0 MAC Freedom) jumped out to a quick 9-1 lead in the opening set.
Stephanie Elechko set the pace with five consecutive kills in the early run.
Morgan Shemonski also jumped out to a quick start with four of her nine kills in the 25-5 first set win.
In the second set, the Eagles continued to put the pressure on with tough serves and efficient ofense. Eastern hit .500 in the second set and won 25-4. Head Coach
Mark Birtwistle used the final two sets to give several of his young players some experience on the floor.
Rachael Graham ran the ofense for most of the final two sets and finished with 11 assists, and
Sarah Roberts hit .667 with four kills out of the middle.
Lynae Stine and
Alexis Harbold saw back row duty and helped limit the Aggies to a negative hitting percentage on the evening. The Eagles won the third set 25-5.
Rylie Haas kept her string of double-digit digs alive with ten. For the first time in her college career,
Michelle Paulsen finished a match without a block. She entered this evening's contest ranked fifth nationally in blocks per set.
The Eagles travel to Elizabethtown for a tough regional tournament. The matches, hosted by Elizabethtown College, will be played at Elizabethtown High School. The Eagles open that tournament with a 6:30 match on Friday against Carnegie Mellon.
