WILKES-BARRE, Pa.--Eastern University Women's Lacrosse took the King's College Monarchs into overtime Thursday afternoon in the Freedom Conference opener, but fell by a final score of 12-11.
Eastern had been 2-0 in overtime play this season prior to Thursday.
Julie Haggan led the Eagles with four goals, including three of the team's last four. Stephanie Hogan, Anna Charlebois and Jenn McKelvie each scored two goals, and Jacquelyn Janda scored once.
Eastern out-shot King's 35-19 and controlled possession better than the Monarchs. King's turned it over 28 times while Eastern only had 16 turnovers.
After a slow first half, Eastern dominated in the second half. The Eagles fell behind 9-5 in the first half, but out-scored the Monarchs 5-1 in the second half. This season, in the first half, the Eagles are being out-scored 87-41. In the second half of games, the Eagles are only being out-scored 61-57.
Haggan received an assist from Nicole Martin and scored the game-tying goal with 10:26 remaining in the game.
Neither team found the back of the net the rest of regulation and the contest headed to overtime with the score knotted at 10-10.
In overtime, Monarchs' Anastasia Araviakis scored the first goal of overtime two minutes into overtime. Haggan scored two minutes later to make it an 11-11 game, but 14 seconds later, Araviakis netted another goal to take the lead.
With under a minute remaining, Eastern's Anna Charlebois earned a free-position shot. On the eight-meter attempt, Charlebois netted a goal, but a shooting space violation on the Monarchs' defense was called and the goal was negated. Charlebois second attempt was blocked and King's hung on to win.
Eastern (3-8) hosts Misericordia University on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
