TUCSON, Ariz.—Eastern University Softball trudged through a
three-game day on Thursday, falling to Morningside College in the first game
and then to Northwestern College in back-to-back games in the afternoon.
The Eagles' bats never seemed to wake up against Morningside.
Eastern posted two hits—one from Haleigh Williams and one from Kasey Williams—in
the 6-0 loss. The game was scoreless through four innings, but Morningside
produced four runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth to lock
up the game.
Eastern's bats were ready in the first inning of the
twinbill with Northwestern. The Eagles knocked in four runs in the bottom of
the first. However, the Eagles couldn't bring anyone home the rest of the way
and fell 12-4.
The Eagles first five batters all reached safely to start
the game. Emily Houck pounded a single to right center with the bases loaded to
score Kristen Waters and Deanna Laughman. Karlee Kerchersky followed with an
RBI-single. Ashton Tomlinson later bunted in Houck from third for the Eagles'
fourth run.
The rest of the game, the Eagles tallied three hits.
Northwestern exploded with seven runs in the fourth inning to put the game
away.
In the third and final game of the day, Northwestern again
scored 12 runs on 14 hits, ending the game in five innings, 12-3.
Eastern tallied six hits with the first three batters in the
lineup—Tomlinson, Waters and Kasey Williams—accounting for five of them. The
three all singled to start the game and give Eastern a 1-0 lead. Northwestern tied
the game with a run in the top of the second, but Eastern scored twice in the
bottom of the third to take the lead. Kasey Williams tripled to knock in Waters
and then took home on a wild pitch.
Northwestern posted crooked numbers in the fourth and fifth
to run away with the win.
Eastern closes out its 10-game trip to Arizona with a 9 a.m.
rematch with Siena Heights and an 11 a.m. bout with Aquinas College.
