Softball Falls To Morningside, Great Falls

TUCSON, Ariz.—Eastern University Softball's challenging week against NAIA schools resumed on Wednesday with back-to-back games with Morningside College and then the University of Great Falls.

Both opponents swung the bat well Wednesday, knocking in 12 hits and then 10 hits, respectively. Eastern fell to Morningside 12-4 in six innings and Great Falls 11-1 in five innings.

The Eagles produced 12 hits in game one and seven in game two.

In game one, Melinda Kreimer led the Eagles with two RBIs. Batting in the five-spot in the lineup, Kreimer went 2-for-3 in the game. Kelsey Clever had the Eagles' other RBI, knocking Kreimer in in the second inning. The Eagles trailed by two going into the second. Kreimer reached base on an error and then advanced to third after Karlee Kerchersky slugged a double off the fence in center. Kreimer then scored on a muffed play by the catcher. Clever brought Kerchersky home with a single up the middle to knot the game at two.

Big innings for the Morningside Mustangs—four runs in the second and five in the sixth—helped them pull away to victory. Four Mustangs had at least two RBIs. Alyssa Welsh took the loss for the Eagles.

The Eagles then switched fields and challenged the University of Great Falls Argos. Again, in similar fashion, the Argos hung crooked numbers on the Eagles in two innings to make the game out of reach. The Argos posted four runs in the second and five in the fifth. Great Falls had six extra base hits: four doubles, a triple and a home run. Eastern recorded doubles from Kristen Waters, Emily Houck, and Deanna Laughman.

Laughman knocked in the Eagles' only run with her double in the third inning that scored Waters.  Waters went 2-for-2 from the plate, but absorbed the loss in the circle. Shelby Abeyta won the game for the Argos, striking out eight of the 20 batters she faced.

Eastern has a full slate on Thursday. They play three games starting at 9 a.m. against Morningside. They then play a doubleheader against Northwestern starting at 1:30.
