MADISON, N.J. -
Cade Harmon scored in the 109th minute to lift Eastern University Men's Soccer past the second seeded FDU-Florham Devils and into Saturday's MAC Freedom Championship match. The Eagles are 4-0-1 in overtime matches this fall.
Today's game was a rematch of a game played at Eastern last Saturday. In that game, the Devils were playing for a chance to make the post-season, and the Eagles were playing for a seed in the post-season. The Devils, according to the Eastern coaching staff, brought a greater sense of will to that game, and escaped with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory.
With a spot in the final on the line, both teams had an equivalent level of motivation in today's contest, and it showed. Both teams had a few opportunities early but neither team was willing to give an inch on defense.
In the 31st minute,
JD Saracco, the MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Year, had a chance to give the Eagles the lead, but Nick Mahalik made the save for the Devils to keep the score level. Saracco had five shots in the match.
The Devils (9-8-1) had their best offensive push of the match in the closing minutes of the first half. In the 41st minute, Chaz Armand ripped a shot off the crossbar. Andrew Ruane and Armand had shots saved by
Quentin Keibler after that effort. Keibler, who missed the entire conference season with injury, made two of his three saves in the final moments before the intermission.
"Quentin did not have to make any great saves today," Head Coach
Mark Wagner said, "but he was solid. He managed the box well, was good in his angles and decisions, and just played very well. We were very encouraged."
Eastern (15-2-2) increased the pressure in the second half. Despite increased possession and time in the FDU end, the Eagles could not solve the FDU defense. Mahalik turned away a
Jadon Ramsing header in the 81st minute to keep the score even at 0-0. Eastern had a 7-6 advantage in second half shots, but only two of those efforts were on goal.
The Devils had the only shot of the first overtime. Both teams had chances early in the second, but as the game wore down, it looked as though it might end in penalty kicks.
Then, for the second time this year, Harmon scored in overtime to lift his squad. Harmon missed the game on Saturday and had been limited in training over the past ten days. His return to action could not have come at a better time.
The freshman forward earned the box from the right side and fired a 20-yard shot to the lower left corner of the goal for his third tally of the year. Harmon scored the overtime game-winner at Lycoming in the season-opener as well.
"We were ready for penalty kicks," Head Coach
Mark Wagner said, "but we were exceedingly pleased not to have to get to them."
The Eagles will play at King's College at 7 pm this Saturday in a rematch of last fall's MAC Freedom Championship match. The Monarchs won that match in overtime. The winner of that contest will secure the MAC Freedom's AQ to the NCAA Tournament.
