Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Tops Grove City for Third Straight

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - Eastern University Men's Basketball beat Grove City College 74-57 for a third straight win. The Eagles used a 16-2 run late in the first half to grab control of the game. Malcolm Garrison made 5-of-6 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Eagles to the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament title.

"Malcolm has been playing great." Head Coach Eric McNelley said. "He's been taking great shots and getting his feet set. He is definitely in a rhythm." Dating back to the last nine minutes of Tuesday's home win over Cabrini, Eastern's lone senior has made 12-of-15 shots from behind the arc. His 25-footer with 4 seconds left proved to be the game-winner against Cabrini. Eastern's offensive execution in the second half would make that type of heroics unnecessary.

The Wolverines (2-2) started the second half on an 8-2 run to pull within a basket at 34-32.  The Eagles reasserted control on the game with a 12-2 run. Austin Carroll and Abraham Kurnick started the run with free throws, and  Shaquan Turk hit a pair of 3-pointers to build a 46-34 edge.

The Eagles shot exceptionally well from long-range in the second half. Garrison made all five of his long-distance efforts after halftime. Over the final 20 minutes, Eastern made 8-of-13 (62%) and held Grove City to 2-of-11 (19%). Austin James made three 3-pointers in the game as the Eagles made over 40 percent of their shots from deep for the second straight game.

"We've established a strong post game," Head Coach Eric McNelley said when asked about his team's recent success. "[and] that has given our guards open driving lanes and open shot opportunities from kick-outs and double teams."

Turk finished with an efficient 14 points, and Victor Pena tallied his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Garrison earned Tournament  MVP honors for his efforts on the weekend.

Caleb Knudsen had nine points and six rebounds to lead Grove City.

"We really passed the ball well this weekend and improved our three-point shooting. We had 45 assists in the two games and rebounded well," said McNelley. "We have areas we need to improve on both offensively and defensively, but we are growing as a unit."

Eastern (3-1) will play at Lancaster Bible College on Tuesday at 8 pm.
