Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Eagles Slip Past Cougars

Dallas, Pa - The Eastern Field Hockey team earned a tough 1-0 victory over their hosts the Cougars of Misericordia earlier today for their eighth win of the season. In what turned out to be a defensive slug fest the Eagles managed a brief spell of offense and tallied the games only score late in the second half.

Eastern did manage to get off to a quick start offensively when they were able to put two shots on net in the first four minutes of the game. Both Hayley Williams and Macey Talhelm were able to get some chances about two minutes apart from each other but couldn't capitalize on the opportunities.

The Eagles managed to take a total of seven shots in the first half while putting six of them on goal but Misericordia goalie Angela Pasquini was up to the challenge each time. In the meantime the Cougars offense was unable to generate anything, barley testing Nicole Berger, totaling three shots in the half.

Head Coach Carmin Azzarano said of the game "We knew Misericordia would come out strong as they are searching for a win, playing at home at homecoming, and seeking conference success." With the defenses leading the way the teams headed to the locker room tied at 0-0. But with a whole half to play the question became which offense would rise up and break through?

Misericordia came out guns blazing in the second half as they were able to earn a penalty corner less than two minutes in at the 36:55 mark. Colby Eldridge was able to get free for a shot but Berger, who finished the day with four saves, but was denied.

As the clock began to tick down Eastern finally got the opportunity they had been waiting for all day. At the 64:32 mark Eastern earned a penalty corner that generated a goal opportunity for Lauren Gay but her shot was saved by Pasquini, who finished the day with 10 saves. However, with the loose ball rolling around and no one able to clear it Jessica Kinzler ripped home the game winning, 1-0, goal for the Eagles.

Azzarano went on to say "With perseverance and team work, they found the groove and finished with a strong goal when we needed it most. As well, the remaining 5 minutes of play was some of our best defense of the game. So proud of this team's toughness. They fight to win for the team."

The win moved Eastern to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference leaving them in a first place tie with King's College. The Eagles will travel to Ewing, N.J. this Tuesday night to take on #1 ranked and defending D-III National Champions TCNJ at 7:30 PM.
