WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Eastern Women's Soccer fell to King's College 4-1 on Saturday night. The Monarchs scored three three second-half goals to earn the victory.
King's opened the scoring in transition in the 21st minute. Allison Andrew scored on her own rebound for 1-0 lead. The goal came only seconds after the Eagles had their first corner kick of the match.
Emily Cole tied the match with her 16th tally of the year in the 29th minute. Her headed goal came on a picture perfect cross from
Katy Laurie.
"We saw in those few minutes, how good we can be," Head Coach
Dan Mouw said. "Hannah [Bomberger] made a really good decision and slipped a ball into Katy's path. Emily scored the goal, but we actually had a couple runners in the box. It was one of the nicest goals we have scored this year."
Less than a moment later, Cole was poised to give the Eagles the lead when she got in behind the Monarch defense in transition. The junior forward made a move around the onrushing goalkeeper but was pulled down before she could roll the ball into the empty net. The referee showed the Monarch goalkeeper a red card and awarded a free kick outside the box.
"That's a tough situation," Mouw posited, " I don't even know what the right thing to tell a goalkeeper to do in that situation. She's faced with a tough choice. In this case, that choice paid off. We did not get the goal on the free kick and they were able to organize with ten and catch us with counters in the second half." Cole's free kick from the edge of the box went just over the goal.
Up a player, the Eagles took a lot of momentum into halftime.
That momentum carried into the early part of the second half as well. Cole knocked a cross from
Lydia Peachey into the underside of the crossbar.
Hanna Kontanis was in position to follow the play, but her header went right to the Monarch goalkeeper. Less than a minute later, the Eagles had another dangerous opportunity following a foul at the edge of the box. That dangerous chance, however, turned into a King's goal when a Monarch player stole the initial pass and started a two on one breakout from midfield. Alexandra Garrett finished off a pass from Ivy Nulton to put the Monarchs up 2-1.
"We got caught on our front foot with the ball going backwards," Mouw said. "Each of the goals we gave up today was following a set piece opportunity. We did not execute well and so we are Oh-for-Wilkes Barre. All five of the goals we gave up this week were about the transition moments on dead balls."
King's struck again in the 76th minute after an Eastern corner kick. Amy Barge fired a great shot to the top left part of the goal to go up 3-1. Less than a minute later the Monarchs iced the the game scoring on another transition goal. The loss puts the Eagles in a precarious situation for the MAC Freedom Tournament. The Eagles would have locked up a spot with a win, but now they will need to beat FDU next Saturday and get some help from either Manhattanville or Delaware Valley.
The Eagles will play at Ursinus at 7 PM on Tuesday.
