ST. DAVIDS, Pa—Eastern University Field Hockey fell behind early in Saturday's home game with No. 6 Franklin & Marshall, and despite playing much better in the second half, the Eagles were unable to recover any ground and lost 5-0.
Freshman Sydney Cole and junior Maria Guarisco each recorded two goals and an assist to lift the Diplomats past the Eagles.
Cole scored in the game's second minute, finishing a deflected save by Eagles' keeper Jennifer O'Neill on a corner play.
Cole scored her second of the game 10 minutes later. Again, after earning a corner, F&M pounded away at the Eagles cage. O'Neill denied the first two attempts, but Cole finished the rebound. The Diplomats later tallied goals in the 15th, 17th and 29th minutes.
The Diplomats took 13 first half shots, and O'Neill made six first-half saves, seven for the game.
Eastern was held to just three shots in the game compared to F&M's 17 and were out-cornered 12-3.
With the loss, Eastern dropped to 2-3. The Eagles have two road games next week. They play at Alvernia on Wednesday and at Rowan on Saturday.
