HAVERFORD, Pa.—Eastern Women's Soccer fell behind early in its season opener and ended up on the wrong end of a shutout against an electric University of Scranton team on Saturday afternoon in the Haverford Invitational.
The Scranton Royals, a team that's made it to the NCAA tournament the past four seasons, shut out the Eagles 6-0 and held them without a shot throughout the contest.
The Royals scored in the game's second minute on a fluky play in the backfield that set up an easy score for Royals' forward Kelsy O'Kane. O'Kane put the Royals up 2-0 in the 20th minute with a penalty kick. An unintentional deflection off an Eagles' defender in the box resulted in the penalty kick.
Down 2-0, the Eagles struggled to maintain possession and threaten on the attack. Scranton scored once more before halftime and added three more goals in the second half.
Eastern, a very young squad this season, started four freshmen on Saturday: defenders Courtney Davis, Ashley Zemeski and Alex Imperatore, and midfielder Alondra Cervantes.
The Eagles will play in the consolation game on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. against Arcadia University.
