ST. DAVIDS, Pa.—Eastern University Women's Basketball slayed the Keystone College Giants Tuesday night, winning the 2014-15 home opener by 30 points.
The Eagles toppled the Giants 94-64 thanks to well-executed passing and the dominating presence of their two towers, Meghan Nowak and Emily Lavin.
Lavin, for the third game in a row broke her own personal best for points in a game, dropping 29 points on Keystone. Lavin pulled down 18 rebounds--seven offensive--and also blocked three shots. Nowak added 22 points with 11 rebounds and three blocks.
The Eagles' passing game carved through Keystone's press and helped set up open looks in the paint. Eastern only turned the ball over 12 times in the game, and on their 34 made field goals, 30 were assisted, an extraordinary ratio of assisted field goals. Four Eagles recorded five assists or more: point guard Emily McPeak led everyone with seven assists, Gina DiDomenico dished out six assists and Kaitlyn Dougherty and Taylor Price each had five dimes.
DiDomenico and Dougherty each scored 11 points as well.
The Giants were led in scoring by Jazmyn Robinson and her 13 points. Alyssa Cuomo added 11 points. Eagles' head coach Nate Davis had stressed to his team leading up to the game, that the Eagles would need to shut down Ashley Evans, who entered the game as the Giants' leading scorer, averaging 22.8 points per game. The Eagles limited Evans to four points.
Eastern led this contest from the first basket of the game, a 3-pointer by Nowak. The Eagles scored six points in the final 26 seconds of the first half to take a 19-point lead into the locker room. Keystone came as close as 14 points in the second half with 11 minutes to go, but Eastern poured it on down the stretch resulting in the 30-point victory.
After Thanksgiving, the Eagles host the Neumann University Knights Saturday at 1 p.m.
