The Eagles lost to Haverford at home on Sept. 27 but haven't loss since then. Eagles' senior middle hitter Katrina Pisch knew that both teams were eager for a rematch but she felt confident before the game that Eastern was ready to avenge that loss. "We had a sour taste in our mouth from the last match that we played them," she said. "We knew what we were up against and we were prepared, so it worked out well."
Pisch, who went without a kill in the first set, knocked down 11 kills in the final two sets to lead the Eagles in kills for the match. Pisch's 11 kills came without an attack error and she hit .524 for the match. Fellow senior Lauren Sproles tallied 10 kills and had tied defensive specialist Miranda Kauffman with a team-high 13 digs. In addition to Sproles' and Kauffman's 26 digs, libero Rylie Haas added 12 digs, defensive specialist Lauren Horst added 11 and setter Rikki Schlager picked up nine digs. Schlager dealt out 31 assists and dumped over five kills.
The last time Eastern and Haverford rumbled, the Eagles only hit .159 for the match and averaged seven errors per set. This time around, the Eagles were much more exact, tabulating a .294 hitting percentage with 3.7 errors per set. The Eagles held Haverford to a .168 hitting percentage.
Haverford played Eastern tight through the first two sets and the beginning of the third, but Eastern pulled away with a 15-4 run to close out the match.
At the start of the match, the Eagles jumped to a 4-0 lead and stretched the gap to 10 points at 21-11, forcing a Haverford timeout. Haverford chipped away with an 8-3 run to come as close as 24-20, but their comeback attempt ended with a botched serve.
Set two proved to be much tighter throughout with 12 different tied scores and seven lead changes. Down two at 16-14, Eastern took a timeout and scored four straight points on kills by Schlager, Morgan Shemonski and Sproles, and then on a Haverford attack error. After the timeout, the Eagles went on an 11-4 run to close out the match. Horst served an ace to close out the set 25-20 in Eastern's favor.
In the beginning of the third set, the Eagles and Fords traded points with five different tied scores. Eastern broke through with a kill by Erin Hillman to take the lead at 11-10 and never looked back. Kauffman stepped to the line and served six times with two aces, a key turning point according to Lauren Sproles. "I think Miranda set us up with some really nice serves and got them out of system," Sproles said. "That gave us the momentum to really get into rhythm."
Eastern's back row of Kauffman, Horst and Haas served out the rest of the set and made a few no-holds-barred dives for digs to keep rallies alive late in the game.
Seniors Pisch and Sproles combined for six of the Eagles' final seven kills to clinch the second round victory and help the Eagles march into the NCAA Regional Final.
The Eagles (31-5) will face host Christopher Newport University on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Regional Final.
