Women's Soccer Stopped at DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa.--Eastern University Women's Soccer put one more shot on goal than the DeSales University Bulldogs on Saturday, but the Eagles were unable to get past DeSales' keeper Michelle Churchman.

The Eagles fell 3-0 on Saturday while putting five shots on goal and one on the crossbar. DeSales' Churchman recorded all five saves and notched her eighth shutout of the season, a DeSales school record. Despite the loss, the Eagles (2-4 Freedom) remain alive in the conference playoff hunt. DeSales improved to 6-0 in conference, maintaining their tie for first.

DeSales struck before the game reached the four-minute mark. Freshman defender Rachel Logue headed in an in-swung corner just off the right post for her first collegiate goal.

Down 1-0, the Eagles succeeded in getting passes into the Bulldogs' box on several occasions, but either ran out of time and space to get a shot off or just missed off goal. Eagles' freshman forward Allison Speese had a good look in the 14th minute, when she juked around her defender and snapped a shot from the right wing that crossed the face of the goal but rolled just outside the left post. DeSales increased its lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute with a goal near the six-yard line by Brady Walsh, the team's leading scorer. Walsh has 15 goals this year.

DeSales carried its 2-0 lead into the locker room. Eastern midfielder Stephanie Le nearly made a dent in that margin in the 53rd minute. Le gathered the ball near the edge of the 18, had a shot blocked, grabbed the rebound and then cracked a shot off the crossbar. The Bulldogs were awarded what appeared to be a generous penalty kick for a foul on the outskirts of the penalty box in the 68th minute. Bulldog Danni Engwall buried the off-speed penalty kick to give DeSales the 3-0 lead.

Eastern freshman midfielder Alondra Cervantes drew a penalty kick in the 82nd minute for the Eagles after being taken down about six yards from goal. Le took the kick for the Eagles, but her shot was saved by DeSales' Churchman. Churchman notched five saves in the win.

With one Freedom Conference game remaining, in order to make the conference tournament, the Eagles need to win that game against Wilkes University (2-4 Freedom) on Saturday at noon and get some help from around the league. The Eagles will be hoping that FDU-Florham (1-3 Freedom) does not collect two more wins in their remaining three games.
