PURCHASE, N.Y.--Eastern University Field Hockey had its playoff hopes dashed on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles fell to the Manhattanville College Valiants 4-3.
The Valiants, who had earned three penalty strokes all season, were awarded two penalty strokes in a 96-second span in the first half Saturday and converted both of them. The Eagles put up a fight to try to come back from the early two-goal deficit but were unable to complete the rally. With the loss, the Eagles (2-4 Freedom) were eliminated from Freedom Conference postseason contention with one regular season game to go.
Eastern's Megan Bolton, Gina Miller and Danielle Frasca each scored. Bolton, who leads the team with eight goals this season, also had an assist on Frasca's goal. Senior Hannah Bartholomew recorded an assist, setting up Bolton for her goal.
Manhattanville's Morgan Parsons scored twice to lead the Valiants. Parsons hit both of the Valiants' penalty strokes, sinking the first in the 16th minute and the second right at the end of the 17th minute. The Eagles cut the Valiants' lead in half with Bolton's corner goal in the 32nd minute, but the Valiants scored a corner goal of their own in the 43rd minute.
In the 56th minute, the Valiants collected a player-up goal to stretch their lead to 4-1. The Eagles, who out-cornered the Valiants 15-8, took advantage of a corner in the 59th minute. Danielle Frasca pushed in her sixth goal of the year, playing it off a Manhattanville defender and into the cage.
The Eagles struck again in the 69th minute on Gina Miller's fifth goal of the year, pulling within one goal. Eastern had a player-up advantage with 45 seconds remaining in the game when Manhattanville's Kristen Savage was given a green card. With 27 seconds to go, Eastern earned a penalty corner and Bolton took one last shot; however, Valiants' goalie Kaitlin Halloran stifled the Eagles' final attempt and secured the win. Halloran stood on her head Saturday, recording 17 saves.
Eastern concludes its season on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Delaware Valley College.
