CENTER VALLEY, Pa.--No. 19 Eastern University Volleyball claimed its third conference victory of the year on Wednesday at DeSales University, winning the match in four sets, 25-6, 25-18, 24-26, 25-14.
The Eagles joined the Freedom Conference in 2008 and until Wednesday had never lost a set to conference opponents in regular or postseason play, a 173-set span.
The Eagles obliterated the Bulldogs in the first set, holding the Bulldogs to just one kill and a -.161 hitting percentage in the set. The second set was all Eastern too, as they led by at least five points from 10-5 on through the rest of the set.
In set three, the Eagles squandered a 10-5 lead and were caught by the Bulldogs at 12-12. The Eagles took advantage of three straight DeSales' errors to regain a five-point lead at 22-17. However, in that run, Stephanie Elechko had to exit the match with an injury after a collision at the net. The Bulldogs took advantage of the absence of the All-Region sophomore middle hitter and rallied to score five straight points to tie the game.
Eagles' Alicia Weigel hit through the block to give Eastern game-point at 24-23, but DeSales' Julie Blessing spiked two straight kills off the block to swing game-point in DeSales' favor. Bulldogs' Chrissy Banos finished off the set and the Eagles' streak with a kill on an overpass. The Eagles, who hit above .300 in each of the other sets, only hit .140 in set three (14 kills, eight errors, 40 attacks).
After losing set three, Eastern stormed out to a 7-0 lead in set four and never looked back. The fourth set was the Eagles' most efficient of the match as they attacked at a .378 clip.
Eastern sophomore outside hitter Alicia Weigel hit .343 for the match and had a team-high 18 kills. Katrina Pisch knocked down 10 kills on 18 swings with just one error. Lauren Sproles and Erin Hillman each added nine kills. Sproles and Rylie Haas each had 20 digs, and Rikki Schlager dished out 50 assists.
The Eagles (17-5, 3-0 Freedom) challenge the top-two Commonwealth Conference teams on Saturday in the MAC Crossover. The Eagles will play against Stevenson at 10 a.m. and then against Lebanon Valley at noon.
