Volleyball Falls To No. 8 Juniata

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern Volleyball made its first home appearance this season, challenging the Juniata College Eagles, the No. 8 team in the country.

Eastern, ranked No. 16 nationally, edged Juniata in the first set and appeared poised to do the same in the second set. However, Juniata rallied from behind to take the second set and proceeded to take the third and fourth as well. Eastern fell 28-26, 24-26, 15-25, 22-25.

Eastern Eagles' freshman forward Stephanie Elechko led the Eastern attack with 14 kills. Three other players recorded double digit kills: Erin Hillman (13), Lauren Sproles (11) and Katrina Pisch (10). Pisch helped raise her season hitting percentage to .498 with a 10-for-18 day with one error (.500). Pisch is the national leader in hitting percentage so far this season.

Overall, Eastern had a below average hitting percentage today, held to .192 thanks to a solid Juniata front line that recorded 10.5 team blocks and a back line that had 78 digs. The Eastern Eagles had 15 service errors for the second time this season, the first time was in the Eagles' only other loss this season (vs. Williams College).

Eastern trailed by three towards the end of the first set, but tied the game at 22-22 after back-to-back kills by Erin Hillman and an ace by Kearby Benak. The two teams traded points back and forth until Katrina Pisch tied the game at 26-26 with a kill. A Juniata attack error gave the Eagles the 27-26 lead and Pisch finished the set 28-26 with another kill.

In the second set, the Eagles took a 23-20 lead when Juniata was charged with a serve rotation error. Juniata rallied to tie the game at 24-24 and then took the set with a kill and Eastern attack error.

Eastern struggled to gain footing in the third set, falling 25-15.

In the final set, Eastern tied the game at 16-16 with a double block by Erin Hillman and Stephanie Elechko. Juniata pulled away to a 24-21 lead. Hillman kept the game alive with a kill that forced a Juniata timeout. However, after the timeout, Juniata put the game away 25-22.

Eastern was hit with just its second loss of the year (12-2). The Eagles host conference opponent DeSales University at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
