ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern Field Hockey suffered a 4-3 loss Wednesday to Alvernia University with Alvernia's game-winning goal coming after the end of regulation time.
With the game tied at 3-3 and less than a minute remaining, Eastern's offense had the ball and was pressing the ball into the circle, looking for a shot or to earn a corner and set up the opportunity to score. However, Eastern did not receive a corner and Alvernia regained possession with enough time to bring the ball downfield, working the sideline, and earning a corner. Regulation time expired, but because Alvernia had earned a corner, play continued until the corner ended. The Crusaders worked the ball around the circle and then chipped a ball in front of Eastern's goal. As a scrum for the ball developed, Alvernia's Sara Galanti managed to push the game-winning score across the goal line.
Eastern led 3-0 early in the second half, but were unable to find the cage the rest of the game.
Megan Bolton put the Eagles on the board in the 12th minute, striking a ball from just inside the circle as the initial receiver of Alexa Borrelli's corner insert.
Jess Jaindl made it a 2-0 game at the end of the 28th minute, using a reverse stick shot to finish a feed from freshman Jess Kinzler. Abby Wagner netted a goal in the start of the 44th minute, assisted by Borrelli, giving Eastern what appeared to be a comfortable lead.
However, in the 50th minute, the Crusaders scored on a deflection and then scored on a penalty stroke in the 52nd minute.
The Crusaders knotted the game up 3-3 with 12:40 remaining after a penalty corner.
Eastern earned eight penalty corners in the first half and three in the second half while Alvernia earned two in the first half and nine in the second half.
The Eagles, now 2-4 this season, will look to put this game behind them as they play No. 18 Rowan University on Saturday at 11 a.m.
