MADISON, N.J.- A four-run first inning got things off to a
good start, but Eastern University Softball was unable to build on that
momentum, and the host FDU-Florham Devils rallied to sweep the Freedom
Conference doubleheader. FDU-used a five-run third to take the first
game 9-5. The Devils scored twice in the third in the second game for a
3-1 win.
Jessi Baker was 4-for-7 in the leadoff spot for the
Eagles. The junior outfielder singled to the pitcher to start the
afternoon. Kasey Bakerdropped a bunt to move her to second, but th
speedy freshman beat out the throw to put two runners on for the heart
of the Eastern order. After Emily Houck lined out, Janelle Fair knocked
in Baker with a double to left center. After Katelyn Donald walked,
Kasey Williams singled down the left field line to drive in two. The
Eagles scored a fourth run on an error.
FDU scored a run in the
bottom of the inning without hitting a ball out of the infield. Fair
escaped further damage and the Eagles held a 4-1 lead going into the
bottomof the third. The Devils scored three of the five runs in the
decisive frame after two were retired.
The Eastern offense was
unable to answer in the bottom of the inning and FDU tacked on another
run with a solo home run from Jenna Apello with one out in the fourth.
The FDU reached 9-4 with two more runs in the seventh before the Eagles
grabbed a single run back in the seventh for the final 9-5 margin.
After
giving up 10 hits in the first game, Fair bounced back and scattered
five hits and gave up only a single earned run in the second game. FDU
pitcher Sidney Worek was up to the challenge. The freshman struck out
nine Eastern hitters and allowed only four hits for the win.
Eastern
grabbed a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the top of the first. FDU hit
back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the frame to tie the game.  FDU
scored a pair of unearned runs in the third inning.
Williams
singled with one out in the top of the fourth, and she would be the last
player for either team to reach base. The Eagles (4-10, 0-4 Freedom)
are scheduled to host Widener in a non-league doubleheader on Monday.
