HAVERFORD,Pa.- With Janelle Fair going the distance Eastern
University Softball scratched out three runs in the top of the sixth
inning to claim a 3-0 win in game one of a doubleheader at No. 22
Haverford College. The Fords took game two 12-1.
Fair worked
efficiently through the first four innings. She allowed an infield
single with two outs in the second and a Haverford hitter reached second
on a two-base error with one out in the fourth. Fair struck out the
next hitter and Kaley Snyder made a nice play to track down the slicing
fly ball to end the inning.
The Eastern had only two hits against
Haverford starter Emily Winsett through five innings. Snyder led off
the sixth with a double to right. After Jessi Baker moved her to third
with a bunt, Jessica Figueroa hit a 1-2 pitch over a drawn in infield
for a 1-0 lead and her third RBI of the year. Emily Houck walked to
bring Fair to the plate. The senior star pulled an inside pitch through
the hole to double the Eastern edge.
With two runs in, the Eagles
turned to trickery for an important insurance run. Fair drew a throw to
second and Houck stole home. Fair advanced to second after the Fords
threw to try to get Houck.
The Fords put runners on in both the final two innings, but Fair shut the door. for her fourth win of the year.
With
two league doubleheaders this weekend, the Eastern staff elected not to
throw Fair in the second game. The Fords jumped out to a 6-0 lead in
the first inning on Paula Redmon. Haverford catcher delivered the big
blow of the inning with her first grand slam of the day. Tatum also
deleivered a grand slam Haverford's five-run third.
