CENTER VALLEY, Pa.- For the second straight year, Eastern
University Women's Basketball and their counterparts from DeSales met in
a regular-season finale with no bearing on the Freedom Conference playoffs.
Both teams will play road games on Wednesday. The host DeSales
University Bulldogs closed the game on a 13-4 run to emerge with a 63-54
win.
Trailing 35-30 at the half, the Eagles gave up points on three of the
first four possessions of the second half to trail by 10 early in the
half. The host Bulldogs built that lead to 46-35 with 15:46 remaining on
the clock before the Eagles began their rally.
Kelsie Patton connected on a 3-pointer from the top of the key to spark a
9-0 run. The long-range effort from Patton was the only field goal in
the run as the Eagles made 6-of-6 foul shots.Eastern was 15-of-18 from
the charity stripe for the day.
After DeSales scored to stretch the lead to 48-44, the Gina DiDomenico
and Patton each scored inside hoops to tie the game. The game was tied
at 50 with 7:16 to play when DeSales junior Sondrine Glovas hit a
3-pointer from the corner to start the decisive run of the game.
Glovas finished with a game-high 22. Meghan Nowak had 15 points and 13
rebounds to lead the Eagles. Nowak scored 12 of her points in the
opening half.
Eastern made 11-of-22 shots from the floor and all six free throw
attempts in the opening half, but DeSales forced 18 turnovers and was
able to get 12 extra shots in the opening frame for the five point
lead.
Kaitlyn Dougherty finished with 10 and DiDomenico had 11. DiDomenico
made a pair of first-half 3-pointers to bring her season total to 53.
The Eagles (10-15, 6-8) are the fourth seed in the Freedom Conference
Tournament and will travel to Madison, N.J. to take on top-seeded FDU-Florham on
Wednesday. DeSales (18-7, 10-4) will play at second-seeded King's.
