READING, Pa.--Eastern Field Hockey picked up its fourth consecutive win and its second shutout as the Eagles earned a 2-0 win over Alvernia University.
Two freshman scored for the Eagles. Lauren Gay and Kaycie Andrew picked up their second goals of the season. Jess Jaindl earned the assist on both goals.
After a scoreless first half, Eastern found its way onto the scoreboard in the 36th minute with Lauren Gay's goal. Eastern scored again in the 52nd minute. Jaindl passed a ball towards Andrew that drew Alvernia's goalie Erin Wunsch out for a challenge, but Andrew beat the keeper to the ball and slid the ball past the keeper before the Alvernia's defenders could recover.
Eastern goalkeeper Veronica Rayer recorded eight saves, including one on a penalty stroke. Rayer stopped the stroke in the 47th minute, raising her stick up to knock the shot away. Coach Camrin Azzarano praised Rayer's goal keeping. "Veronica is showing a lot of fight in the goal cage," she said. "She is focused and making the saves she needs to."
The Eagles continue their five-game road trip, taking on Wilkes University at 1 p.m. Saturday.
