LOWER GWYNEDD, Pa.- Eastern University Women's Lacrosse entered this
evening's non-league match-up needing some days to recover. The Eagles
battled to a tough 10-5 road win at Gwynedd-Mercy College and will now
have nearly a week to prepare for a Freedom Conference playoff game.
Eastern
scored the first four goals of the contest and led 6-2 at half. It was
the second straight outing for the Eagles where they were able to limit
their opponents' chances in the opening half. Though the host Griffins
had 13 total shots in the first half, the Eastern defense was able to
pressure those shots to the point that starting goalie Lindsay Corbitt
had to make only three saves in the opening frame to earn the win.
Kendall
Rood and Jocelyn Paul each scored twice in the opening period and
Eastern controlled seven of the nine first-half draws.
The game
opened up a little to start the second half, and the Griffins put a pair
of goals past Kristy Getsay in the opening two minutes. As the half
progressed, however, Getsay found her rhythm, and the senior stopped six
shots in relief.
Allie Fultz converted a free position shot to
put the Eagles up 7-4, but the Griffins responded 90 seconds later to
pull to within two goals at 7-5. Eastern worked to keep possession and
attacked selectively as the period progressed, and the strategy worked
as Paul Reinhold and Rood each scored goals in the final 15 minutes for
the final margin.
The Eagles await the result of the King's vs.
FDU game this Saturday to know the opponent and location for their
Freedom Semifinal match on Wednesday. If FDU wins, the Eagles are the
two seed and will host King's. If the Monarchs reign in that match, then
the Eagles will fall to the two seed and will travel to FDU.
