ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern University Women's Lacrosse earned its first win of the season, edging Alvernia University at home Saturday 13-12.
Senior Allie Fultz and freshman Sara Blaylock each netted three goals, leading the Eagles to victory. Shannon Wilcox, Courtney Reinhold and Kendall Rood each scored two goals, and Emmy Fisher scored one goal, her first of the season.
The first ten minutes of the game belonged to the Eagles, as they scored four unanswered goals to start the game. Three of those goals came from free position shots. Senior Courtney Reinhold netted two free position goals during this stretch, putting the Eagles on the scoreboard with 27:13 and then scoring again with 21:54 to go.
Ahead 4-0 after ten minutes, Eastern allowed Alvernia to regain some ground over the next ten-minute span. The Crusaders fired off three goals past Kristy Getsay and trailed 4-3 with 10 minutes to go. The Eagles and the Crusaders traded goals the next two possessions, but the Eagles then rattled off four unanswered goals for the second time in the game to go up 9-4. However, just before the half, the Crusaders snuck in two goals, one with 45 seconds left and then another one with just 30 seconds to go.
The Crusaders carried the momentum into the second half, scoring the first two goals of the half to cut their deficit to 9-8.
Eastern then forced Alvernia to continue to play catch-up the rest of the game. At 20:39, Shannon Wilcox scored to put Eastern up 10-8, and for the rest of the game, the two teams alternated goals. Because the Eagles were able to respond to the rest of the goals scored by the Crusaders, they never gave up the lead for the entire game.
With one win in the books, the Eagles hit the road to challenge The College of New Jersey, ranked No. 4 in the country. The game will be played at 7 pm on Tuesday.
