The host Green Terror (4-2) grabbed a 6-5 lead with eight seconds remaining
in the third and, after scoring a pair of goals early in the fourth,
held off a late surge from the Eagles to hold onto the win.
In
contrast to Eastern's wild win on Wednesday in Virginia Beach, this
afternoon's game had only three penalties. McDaniel scored the first two
goals of the game. Eastern bounced back with three straight goals to
grab a short-lived lead midway through the second period. Andrew Travers
scored his third of the year to get the Eagles on the board. Eastern
then took advantage of its only man up opportunity of the game when
Grant Ferguson fed fellow New Yorker Will Johnson on the crease in the
opening seconds of the second period. Ron Johnson scored his second
goal of the year to give the Eagles the lead.
McDaniel answered
with a goal from Ben Yancheski with three minutes left in the half to
tie the game. McDaniel had a slight 15-12 edge in shots at the half, but
both goalies had four saves in the opening thirty minutes.
Yancheski added his second of three on the day with just under twelve minutes remaining in the third.
With
three minutes left in the third, the game broke open. Kyle Gillam
scored from Chris Farrar to level the score at 4-4. Just over a minute
later, the Green Terror reclaimed the lead on a JS Duke goal. Eastern
tied the game with 20 seconds left in the period on Eric Waibel's second
career goal, but McDaniel controlled the ensuing face-off and Duke gave
the hosts the lead for good with his second of the day.
Will
Johnson scored his second goal of the afternoon with seven minutes to
play to renew Eastern hopes, but McDaniel goalie Christian Dallmus was
up to the challenge with three of his eight saves in the final two
minutes to earn the win.
The Eagles open their home schedule against Utica College on Tuesday afternoon.
