MADISON, N.J.- In their final road test of the regular season,
Eastern University Women's Basketball dropped a 66-57 decision at
FDU-Florham. The Devils made 53 percent of their second half shots and
converted 17-of-22 free throws after the intermission to pull away to
the win.
The Eagles (17-7, 8-5) never found a rhythm offensively,
as the host Devils forced 16 first-half turnovers.Even with the
giveaways, the Eagles only trailed 28-24 at the intermission as Meghan
Nowak converted from inside at the buzzer.
The Devils did most of
their first-half damage from behind the arc as Tasza Carter hit 4-of-7
from behind the line to lead all scorers with 13 at the break. Nowak was
4-of 6 from the field to lead the Eagles with 11 points, but her
teammates combined to hit just 4-of-22 in the opening frame.
After
the intermission, the Eagles struggled from the floor, but were able to
stay in the game behind solid free throw shooting early. Nowak made all
eight of her free throws after the break, and the game stayed within
reach for the visiting Eagles.
Eastern trailed 47-42 midway
through the second half, when FDU's Kyra Dayon sparked a 7-0 run to put
the Devils up 11. The Eagles would eventually cut the deficit to five at
53-48 on a consecutive inside hoops from Bekah Roland and Ellen Dvorak,
but they would get no closer as the Devils hit free throws down the
stretch.
FDU (12-12, 6-7) finished the day shooting 42 percent
from the floor. Carter finished with a game-high 20 and Kyra Dayon
finished with 19 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, and five steals.
Nowak finished with a team-high 19 points. Roland was the only other
Eagle in double-figures with 13.
This evening's results lend
considerable clarity to the women's side of the Freedom Conference
playoff picture. Regardless of Saturday's results, the Eagles will be
the No. 4 seed and will take on top-seeded King's. DeSales will travel
to Misericordia.
Eastern wraps up the regular season with a their
home finale against DeSales at 1:00. The team will recognize Roland and
fellow senior Lori Wileczek prior to that game.
