NEW YORK--Eastern University Volleyball rolled through the final matches to win the NYU Violet Classic without dropping a set. Senior three-time All-Americans Courtney Reinhold and Maria Horning earned All-Tournament recognition for the event.
The No. 5 Eagles (15-1) blasted Hunter College 25-9, 25-7, 25-12 in the opener, and beat Gettysburg in three for the second time this season in the second game. They won the Gettysburg match 25-14, 25-10, 25-15. With Horning running the show, the Eastern offense clipped along at a steady .417 hitting percentage for the day.
Coach Birtwistle was most pleased with the play of his middles.
"Rachel [Wenger] and Katrina [Pisch] were doing some really good things attacking in the middle today," he said, " with those two attacking, we were holding their middles and our outsides were able to hit against a single block."
Reinhold (21 kills) and Lauren Sproles (18 kills) enjoyed great success against the defense.
Britwistle was also impressed with his squad's improvement on defense.
"A lot the new stuff we are working on with blocking is starting to take shape, " he said, " and with that, we are getting a lot better in transition. When they tip or take certain shots we are able to go back at them better. That quickness in transition has been a point of emphasis in practice, and we saw what it did against some good teams this weekend."
Horning earned MVP honors for the tournament with 65 assists on Saturday.
The Eagles have now won 92 straight matches against unranked opponents. They will look to extend that streak on Wednesday with a home game against 2010 Freedom Conference finalist FDU Florham.
