Men's Soccer Blanks Fords

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--The Eastern University Men's Soccer team defeated the Haverford Fords 1-0 in a rainy afternoon home game Wednesday.

The Eagles got on the board in the 64th minute when senior Josh Martin fired a shot from the left that deflected off a defender, arced up and dipped into the upper right corner past the Fords' leaping goalie, Andriy Mshanetskyy.

Mitch Osterhouse made the assist. The goal was Martin's second on the season and the third of his career. All three of his goals have been game-winning goals in 1-0 games.

The rain created a slick playing surface and caused the Eagles to alter their strategy. "We wanted to be more direct and shoot from any and everywhere knowing that a skipped ball can happen in a game like today," Coach Mark Wagner said. "And I have to give credit to Josh [Martin]; he just ripped the ball, got a nice deflection and it went in the net."

The Eagles shot the ball 12 times, eight more times than Haverford. The Eagles also earned nine more corner kicks than the Fords, 14-5.

Eagles' goalie Jon Crowder earned the shutout, his first this season.
