ST. DAVIDS, Pa.-- The Eagles scored early against the Centenary Cyclones and never looked back.
Eastern men's soccer finished off Centenary at home Saturday afternoon 4-0.
Brandon Reichart scored the first goal of the game in the sixth minute. The goal marked the earliest score this season for the Eagles. (Previously, their earliest goal was recorded in the 16th minute.) Coach Mark Wagner was glad to see his team on the scoreboard early. "I think for our guys that took a little pressure off them and that caused them to free up and play some of our best possession soccer that we've played this season," he said.
The Eagles tacked on three more goals by the 66th minute, giving Wagner the freedom to get quality time for some of his younger players. Wagner gave time to two backup goalkeepers and he said they all played well.
The second goal for the Eagles was set up by Josh Martin. "This is Josh's third really important contribution in three games," Wagner said. "He was out wide-left, beat his man, dribbled to the end line, and just cut a real nice ball back. [Austin] Stover held his run and timed it well. Stover owes a healthy dose of thanks to Martin for setting him up well."
Wagner also pointed out Braden Gross' upper-corner goal on a "half-chance" shot. "Grant [Supplee] hit a hard ball across, Braden received it well, took one touch and took a half-chance," he said. "I'm very pleased with that one because we've been telling our guys you need to take more half-chances, you don't have to have beaten a defender to rip the ball."
Brandon Beaumont scored the final goal for the Eagles, his first this season.
The Eagles out shot the Cyclones 20-3.
The Eagles move into conference play next Saturday with a game at King's College. In the past two seasons, the home team has won the match. Wagner said he hopes to reverse that trend.
"We're expecting King's to be a good team," Wagner said. "It will be a tough game. They're well-organized and well-coached. They just play good soccer. It's always a tight game."
