Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Wins at Widener

CHESTER, Pa.- Eastern University Field Hockey scored twice in the final ten minutes to erase a late deficit and earn a 3-2 non-league win at Widener University. Abby Wagner scored the game winner with just over two minutes remaining.

The game began with a brilliant twilight rainbow over top of Edith R. Dixon Field. As the skies cleared for game time, the path to goal did not for Eastern. The visiting Eagles blasted 12 first-half shots, but had nothing to show for it as Widener goalie Maggie Karmeris and her defense recorded seven first-half saves. Widener did not put a shot on goal until the 43rd minute of the contest.

The Eagles returned to the field after the intermission with renewed commitment to go forward. Jess Jaindl redirected a Yvonne Herbster drive to put the Eagles up 1-0 in the 38th minute.

As they had in the first half, the visitors kept the ball in and around the Widener circle, but the host Pride (3-1) took advantage of a transition chance in the 44th minute to level the score at 1-1.  A giveaway in the midfield resulted in a second Widener tally in the 50th minute.

The game then evolved into an improbable string of Eastern penalty corners. The Eagles finished the evening with 20 penalty corners--14 in the second half-- but each time the Pride defended their cage. Widener recorded seven defensive saves behind Kameris.

As the clock ticked toward zero, it seemed that it might turn into one of those days for the Eagles. Kelby Bolton started the play that made the difference. The junior midfielder retreated toward midfield to chase down a clearing attempt. She stole the ball and carried toward the circle. She spotted Jess Jaindl running up the right wing and hit her former high school teammate on the run. Jaindl drove to the edge of the circle and cut the ball back to Bolton. Bolton ripped a hard shot toward the far post that Brittany Moyer-- also a Christopher Dock grad-- redirected home with just over nine minutes to play.

With the score tied, the Eagles gained confidence in a result, and it looked as though the win might get earned with a penalty stroke as a Widener defender handled a ball behind Karmeris, but Karmeris stopped the stroke. Wagner's game winner came from a tight angle on the left side after Herbster carried the ball into the circle.

Eastern finished the contest with a 25-4 edge in shots.

"We were still recovering, I think," said Head Coach Camrin Azzarano. "We had such a battle on Tuesday night, and I think our execution was a little off, but we found a way."

The Eagles (2-2) are off until Wednesday when they will host Alvernia University.
