Eastern University Men's Soccer dropped a 2-1
double-overtime decision at Alvernia this afternoon. It was the fourth
straight overtime decision for the the Eagles (2-2).
The Eagles
controlled the action for the opening moments of the game, but several
great chances, including a shot of the post by Jair Saenz in the ninth
minute, went unfinished.
After the game settled a bit, the host
Crusaders (3-1) pulled ahead on a penalty kick from Kyle Martyn in the
30th minute. That lead was short-lived, however, as Howie Fisher nodded
home a bouncing ball on an Austin Stover throw in for his first
collegiate goal.
The Eagles held a 6-2 edge in shots for the opening 45 minutes, but the game was equal in the only stat catagory that counts.
"We
were fantastic out of the gate," said Eastern Head Coach Mark Wagner.
"We had several great chances that we needed to put away."
The
Crusaders had more possession in the second half, but Eastern keeper Jon
Crowder turned away three shots to force the game to extra time. Dexter
Lamparter hit the upright in the 76th minute for the best Eastern
chance of the second half.
The Eagles seized control of the match
at the start of the overtime, and they held a 4-0 edge in shots through
ten minutes. The Crusdader defense stood its ground against the
barrage.
The Eagles had the first shot of the second overtime,
but shortly thereafter the Crusaders Kyle Mellon won a head ball near
midfield and put Erik Franks in behind the Eastern back line. Franks
delivered the game-winner in the 103rd minute.
