ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern University Softball entered Senior Day against DeSales knowing that playoffs were out of reach. Nonetheless, the Eagles (17-17, 4-10 Freedom) were motivated to end the year on a high note as they honored seniors Michelle Morongell, Kristine Rosko, and Molly Oberholzer. That motivation, however, was not enough as they dropped a pair of tight games against the play-off bound Bulldogs.
Sophomore pitcher Janelle Fair allowed only four hits in the opener, but a Cassie Wegman homer in the second and a Christine Petrilla RBI single in the fourth gave the guests all the runs they would need as Jen Lococo matched Fair pitch for pitch to earn the shutout win. Fair struck out six and did not walk a batter to drop to 9-7 on the year.
The Eagles fell behind 1-0 early in the nightcap, but rallied to tie the game on a Maggie McGowan solo blast to right-center. The junior shortstop broke the Eastern single-season RBI mark (34) on her school-record tenth of the year. McGowan led the Freedom Conference in both categories entering play today.
The Bulldogs picked up a pair of runs with the aid of a pair of fielding miscues in the fifth and stretched their lead to 5-1 with another two in the top half of the seventh. The home side struck for a single tally in the seventh and had the tying run to the plate, but they were unable to draw any closer.
Fair finished the day with a hard-luck 1-7, including a ball that the DeSales'Â centerfielder caught while reaching over the fence to lead off the fourth inning of the opener. Though her average dropped on the day, she becomes just the second Eastern hitter to finish with a .400 average. McGowan finished with single-season marks in RBI's, Home runs, and slugging percentage.
