Softball Sweeps PBU

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Eastern University Softball won a pair of five inning games over visiting Philadelphia Biblical University in a non-league doubleheader this afternoon. Maggie McGowan picked up the win and hit her fifth homer of the year in a 9-1 win in the opener, and Janelle Fair pitched the Eagles to a 10-0 shutout in the nightcap.

Both teams scored single tallies in the first inning of the opener. PBU, playing for the first time in two weeks, hit three solid balls in the inning, and the damage could have been worse had it not been for a shoestring grab on a sinking liner in right field by Tori Jacobson. Eastern leveled the score with an unearned run in the bottom half.

The hosts pulled away with a five run third. The inning started innocently enough as the first two Eastern hitters made outs. The next seven Eastern batters reached safely on six hits and an error. McGowan ripped a solid single to right for an RBi to give the Eagles the lead.

McGowan retired the Crimson Eagles in order in the fourth and come to the plate with two on and one out in the bottom of the inning. The junior pitcher/shortstop turned on a low inside pitch for her fifth home run of the season to put the Eagles up eight.

McGowan allowed five hits and struck out eight to earn her fourth win of the year.

Game two also featured a big third inning. With a 1-0 lead heeding into the home half, Eastern sent ten players to the plate to grab a commanding edge. Jaimie Schwartz dropped a double in a perfect spot down the left field field line to drive in a pair.

PBU threatened in the fourth, but Fair worked her way out of a bases loaded-no out jam with a 1-2-3 double play and foul out. Fair picked up her fourth win of the year and sees her ERA drop to .78. The sophomore helped her own cause in the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off double to start a three run rally.

The Eagles (11-5) are back in action this Saturday at FDU-Florham.
