Fast Starts Not Enough For Softball at FDU

MADISON, N.J.- Eastern University Softball scored multiple first-inning runs in both games of their doubleheader at FDU-Florham, but the host Devils rallied twice to earn the Freedom Conference sweep. FDU took the opener 9-4 and scored five runs in the seventh and won the second game on a one out grand slam.

Shortstop Maggie McGowan launched a three-run bomb in the top of the first to give the Eagles a lead in the opener. Her sixth round-tripper of the year ties a the program mark for homers in a season and puts the junior within one of the career mark.

The Devils came back with three runs on four singles and an error in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. The eagles went quietly in the second and the Devils rapped out three more hits for another pair of runs in the second. The hosts built their lead to 9-3 before the Eagles added an unearned run in the seventh.

Janelle Fair banged a three-run double in the first to put the Eagles up and Tori Jacobson drove in a  fourth tally with a ground ball. The Devils scored five times through the first three innings to grab a 5-4 edge before the Eagles grabbed the lead back with a three-run fifth.

FDU loaded the bases in the seventh and pushed one run across before Sarah Lima ended the game with a grand slam. The loss drops the Eagles (11-7) to 1-5 in Freedom Conference play. They will look to get back on the winning track this Tuesday with a pair of midweek doubleheaders out of league. They return to Freedom Conference action next Saturday against Manhattanville College.
