COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.- A late rally by the Eastern University men's
lacrosse squad fell just short as they dropped a 7-6 decision at Ursinus
College (4-1). Chris Farrar scored three goals to lead the Eastern
attack.
Ursinus struck early in the first period on an unassisted
goal from Jeff Ocampo. The Bears added a second goal in the 12th minute
of action and picked up a third with only a second remaining in the
opening period.
Ursinus took a 4-0 lead early in the second
period before Farrar scored a man-up goal on a Zac Ivy pass to give the
Eastern attack some life. Ursinus held a 16-7 edge in shots in the
first half. The host Bears dominated the ground ball game in the first
period before things evened out in the second.
Mike Bloom scored
for the hosts midway through the third period, but Ivy scored less than
two minutes later to pull the Eagles to within three goals at 5-2. The
third period ended much like the first as the Bears converted a long
clearing attempt into a goal with less than ten seconds on the clock.
"To
give up two goals like that really hurt," said Head Coach Brandon
Childs, "We knew what we needed to do there and we didn't get it done.
Those goals really cost us in a game like that." The Eagles did get a
lift near the close of the third period as Dan Hoffstetter saw his first
action of the year. The junior midfielder made things happen as soon as
he stepped on the field and drew the praise of his coach for being
ready to go.
"We broke up the midfield lines to get something to
happen," Childs said, "and Hoffstetter was really good. He hit the pipe
on a shot and was creating all kinds of chances." The Eagles would take
advantage of one of those chances early in the fourth as Matt Soldano
came off a Hoffstetter screen and scored his second of the year. Ursinus
made it 7-3 with twelve minutes to play on a Tom Adelsberger goal.
Farrar
scored his second of the day on an Andy Jameson pass, but were unable
to take advantage of their second man-up chance of the afternoon and the
Eagles went to the final two minutes down three. Ron Johnson scored his
first of the year with 1:18 on the clock and Farrar scored from Will
Johnson with 33 seconds to play, but the Bears won the final face-off of
the afternoon and held on for the win.
The Eagles (1-2) return to the friendly confines of Olson Field for a 1:00 pm game next Saturday against Goucher College.
