MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- Starter Nick Moeltner scattered four hits in an
8-1 complete game win over Catholic University in Eastern's fourth game
of their spring break trip to South Carolina. Moeltner struck out seven
and walked just one to even his record at 1-1 on the year.
While
Moeltner's pitching was certainly the story of the day, their were
several good offensive performances as well. Scott Renauro collected a
season-high five hits and 3 RBIs in the lead-off spot, and Devon
Ziegenfuss picked up a critical 2 RBI single to give the Eagles the lead
in the sixth inning.
The Cardinals (6-4) grabbed a 1-0 lead on a
two-out double in the second inning. After the double, Moeltner set
down the next fifteen Catholic hitters in order to give the Eastern
offense a chance to go to work.
"It was one of the best pitching
performances I've seen," said Head Coach Matt Midkiff, " Every ptich he
needed he was able to throw, and he was really efficient through each
inning. It was almost like, after yesterday, (a bad loss to Wesley
College), Nick was not going to leave anything to chance. He would not
let us lose."
The Eagles picked up hits in each of the first five
innings, but they were unable to string anything together until the
sixth when Mike McNulty and Greg DeSarro each hit safely to start the
inning. Kristian Cortizo bunted both runners into scoring position and
Ziegenfuss rapped a sharp single to plate the pair. While the two runs
were all Moeltner would need, the Eagles scored two more on a Renauro
two-out single.
Catholic snapped Moeltner's consecutive batter
streak with a two-out single in the seventh, but the sophomore
right-hander coaxed a ground ball to end the inning. Moeltner has
allowed just 3 earned runs in his three starts this spring.
"We did a lot of good things today," Midkiff continued, "we put pressure on their defense,a nd our defense behind Nick was very good. When we looked at the trip, we felt like 4-1 would be a good trip. Losing yesterday put some pressure on us today for that, but everyone followed Nick's lead today. We have to take care of business tomorrow as well."
Eastern
tacked on two runs in the eighth and another two in the ninth for the
final margin. They conclude their Southern swing with an 8:00 am game
against Penn State Harrisburg.
